How to Make a DIY Memory Box for Your Kids (and Tame the Paper Clutter!)
If you’ve got a growing pile of school papers, artwork, report cards, and random scribbles that you just can’t throw away… welcome, friend. It actually doesn’t end. I am pretty sure we are responsible for this paper clutter even after these people are adults and leave our households. 😂
HOWEVER, you don’t need to spend $100 on one of those pre-made “school memory boxes” floating around Instagram ads. You can totally make your own for like $15—and it’s even better because it’s personalized, affordable, and super easy to update each year. Courtesy of my beige flag: my “I-can-make-that-myself” gene, which cannot be stopped. lol.
Let’s dive in and get you set up with a DIY memory box for kids that will help you conquer the clutter and still keep all the special things you do want to remember.
Why a Memory Box?
Every school year brings a flood of papers—some are sweet treasures with handprints and footprints and some are “why did my child write their name 76 times on printer paper and bring it home??” 😅. The memory box system is a perfect middle ground:
- A place to save the keepers (without guilt).
- A simple way to say goodbye to the extras.
- A fun yearly tradition with your child as you add their “school interview” and highlights.
Bonus? It pairs perfectly with my digital artwork storage method (aka the “no more feeling bad about recycling art” strategy).
Supplies You’ll Need
(Affiliate links below—thanks for supporting this little free corner of the internet 💛)
- File folder bin with lid – Amazon option | Walmart option
- Hanging file folders – Amazon option | Walmart option
- Printable Sticker Sheets / Yearly interview pages (I made you a free Canva template!)
- Clear contact paper (if you go the printed paper route) – Amazon option | Walmart option
- A printer (this is mine, it rocks!) – Amazon option | Walmart option
- Optional Paper cutter for labels!

Step 1: Set Up Your Bin
Grab your file folder bin and hanging folders. You’ll want one folder per grade (Preschool through 12th grade). You can also add extras like “Baby Years,” “Sports/Activities,” or “Art Showcase.” I included the years my daughter was in preschool in the school bin, and have a separate “baby memorabilia” bin for ultrasound photos, her beloved stuffy, etc.
Step 2: Print Your Labels & Interview Pages
This is the fun part! I created a set of editable Canva templates you can download and personalize for each child. Each grade folder has space for:
- Their age that year/what year(s) it spans
- School and Teacher’s name
- Favorite things (book, food, subject, friend, etc.)
- About me info (what they are good at, enjoy, etc)

Just print them at home on the super cheap sticker paper I linked under supplies and stick them onto the front of each file folder. OR you can print on normal paper and press them on/protect them with contact paper. These questions are really similar to the ones I included in my back to school self-portrait activity! I would throw a piece of the sticker paper in each folder so when you go to print it each year, you aren’t looking for the special paper. 😬
Also, I am going to use my first day of school portrait each year, but you could also use their actual school portrait or a digital copy of their self-portrait.

Step 3: Fill as You Go
Throughout the year, tuck in report cards, artwork, and anything else you can’t bear to part with. At the end of the school year, sit down with your child, fill out the yearly interview together, and choose the highlights to keep. Also a great time to add to the digital portfolio if you’ve just been shoving it all in there.
Trust me: it feels so good to have one neat box per kid instead of mountains of paper hiding in random drawers and closets. 👏
