Erin Thompson: Photographer, Military Spouse, and Creator of “Photographers Changing Stations”
Every once in a while, you meet someone whose passion spills far beyond their own work. Someone who not only creates beautiful images, but also builds community, supports others, and turns their experience into something that makes life easier for everyone around them. In this post, that person is Erin Thompson of Erin Thompson Photography! She’s a fellow teacher and photographer extraordinaire who uses her powers for good. 😉
I had the joy of getting in front of Erin’s camera recently while she was house-hunting here in Colorado Springs. As a photographer myself, I almost always take my own family photos — but letting someone else document our family was so easy and incredibly meaningful! Erin made the whole process seamless and it was so much better than running back and forth to my tripod while wrangling everyone myself.
Her communication before and after the session was so professional and reassuring, and she prepared us so beautifully there was absolutely nothing to stress about. And the images? Stunning. Will remember them FOREVER. Ordering prints and extra files from her gallery was simple, and everything arrived unbelievably fast. She’ll be taking Colorado Springs clients around in spring of 2026, so definitely look for her!
All of that aside, the real reason I wanted to start this new community spotlight series with Erin goes far beyond her talent behind the camera.
Serving the Military Spouse Photographer Community
Erin is a military spouse, and she deeply understands the unique challenges that come with building a photography business while moving every few years. Instead of continuing to let that struggle be isolating and frustrating, she turned it into a niche mission to help other military spouse photographers thrive, stay connected, and never feel alone in their work.
One of her most incredible contributions is a portion of her website called “Photographers Changing Stations.” It’s a searchable database of military spouse photographers organized by state, duty station, and location. It also has free resources to help military photographers seamlessly PCS their passions and navigate operating a business while being a military spouse.
It’s a gift in two directions: Military families can easily find a photographer you can relate to and trust wherever the military sends you next. Military Spouse Photographers can be discovered through Photographers Changing stations, build your client base in a new place, and connect with others who are navigating the same constant transitions.
It’s brilliant. It’s generous. And it fills a gap so many of us in this community have felt for years.
A Community Builder at Heart
Beyond the directory, Erin also runs an active, FREE Facebook community for military spouse photographers. Inside, she offers resources, encouragement, virtual co-working hours, and a space to ask questions and collaborate. It reflects who she is at her core: supportive, kind, and deeply committed to helping others succeed.
Erin is one of those rare people who leads with kindness and shows up for others consistently. Her heart for service shines through everything she does — through her art, through her education, and through the way she brings people together.
I’m honored to know her, grateful for the beautiful images she created for my family, and thrilled to recommend her as the first feature in this little series of people, places, and things I want you to know about.
If you’re a military family searching for a photographer, a military spouse photographer looking for community, or if you simply want to connect with someone who is doing good work in the world, Erin is your girl! Here are a few of the images she took for our family that I will cherish forever (she has her own blog post linked here)!
